The easy way is to dial the international access character '+' on a cell phone, usually by holding the 0 key, then a US number becomes something like +16035551212 and that will work from any country, even the US which is generally backward about implementing international standards.

You dial 00 that is the access code out of the UK and then 1 for the USA. If you intend to do it a lot and want free calls to land lines and Internet try Talk-Talk. I have International calls to the EU, USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia and broadband for £20.99 a month. I even have a website on TalkTalk - only a tiny 15 mb but it looks much bigger! lol But you may find there is a waiting list and the exchanges are being unbundled through this year. I'm supposed to have 8 Mbs - but only have 2.2 Mbs - but they are trying to fix the line.

From UK to USA is 001 then the full number. From USA to UK is 011 44, then remove the initial zero from the UK area code and dial the rest of the number.
