It was created by African slaves brought to Brazil as a way of training and practicing fighting and self defence. It was disquised as a dance form so their captors/masters would not know what they were doing as they were not permited to train or do anything that could put them in a position to rise up against the masters.
So it doesn't have any real significants to the U.S. It's more of a significants to African slaves in Brazil but also African slaves in general who all strugled to keep traditions alive in there captive countries as well as one of the begining steps of freeing themselfs from their captors.

It stems from an African martial art that was tought in Africa the dancing mixed in is what evolved it into Capoeira.

Many people mistakingly beleive it to be a Brazilion art. Although it was created there, it was not created by Brazilions. Similar to how Shaolin although linked to Chinese monks it was tought to them and created by the East Indian people.
