I have made several posts about my 2 month trouble with conjunctivitis. It MUST be bacterial, because Vigamox has been the ONLY thing that has cured/controlled the acute symptoms. The problem is, the conjunctivitis flares up again when I stop the Vigamox. This time around, I'm on Vigamox drops, and 50 mg of Doxycycline 2 times a day. My question is, how long should I keep this regimen? And when (or if) should I get a culture taken? Please do not tell me to just ask my doctor. I'm posting because 8 eye doctor visits have not cured me. I am of course consulting with my doctors on every move I make. Thank you for your help.

You should use the drops and the antibiotics (doxycyline) for at least 7 days. If you weren't prescribed antibiotics for at least that long, then your symptoms would reoccur. However, any doctor should know this. If your 7 day regime isn't working, an increased dose for a longer period of time may be necessary.

You may also want to get your immune system checked (i.e., igm, igg, iga levels). You may have a weakened immune system that is making you more susceptible to repeated infections. Your eye may just represent a weak spot; a point of easy entry for the bacteria.

I had a similar experience with a reoccurring chest infection and a weakened immune system in conjunction with a past infection and susceptible spot for entry was the end explanation for it all. Took a double dose of antibiotics for a longer period of time and it never came back.

Keep your fingers out of your eye. Only use a washed hand to touch the eye. Avoid make-up (if you are a girl). This is all pretty obvious, I guess. Mention it, though, just in case.

Well you should of had it cultured a long time ago by now. Obviously your conjunctivitis is not fully cured by vigamox. Go see another doctor if you think it is not being taken care of. I have never seen a patient that has had this for more than a couple of weeks. You could have something else going on.

Have you changed shampoos, soaps, laundry detergent in the last two months? Did you buy a new plant or had new carpeting put in your place? Have you moved to a new place? Look around in your enviroment and see what you have done in the past two months that could have brought this on, or has aggravated this condition. I can't imagine that a doctor hasn't asked you or investigated this, if they were all that good.

Do you wear contact lenses? If so, did you change your contacts, and buy a new case? Have you cleaned all of your wash cloths in HOT water? Your doctor should have already taken a culture!! This is the only way to know what bacteria is growing in your eye!!
