Maybe you were wearing clothing colors that washed you out. Maybe you looked or acted like you were in a pissed off mood. My guess is that they care and you were sending out some "off" signals either by appearance or attitude.

That was very rude. Most people ask how you are as a polite way to acknowledge you are there and to start a conversation. They should ALWAYS wait for your reply, If you say your fine then they should tell you "that's great!" NEVER that you look under the weather unless you have told them such.
I'm afraid I would have said "what weather is that? Is there going to be a hurricane?" OR
And this is a big breach; I would have told them they looked like they'd been under a moving bus. Do you think they would have gotten the point?

If you were feeling fine and this person misread you so badly, I would say this was just mindless conversation. There is also the chance this person is just naturally happier if all around them are miserable. It could have been a take down more than a put down.
If you felt offended I would guess your instincts are trying to tell you to avoid this person. You may already be subconsciously aware of this persons ill will and you should behave accordingly.

Some people use this phrase to open a conversation because it is a generally acceptable one, not too obtrusive, a question that everyone will be able to answer. If they asked you what colour underpants / knickers you were wearing, then you would have every right to be offended ! I think they were just trying to be friendly.

That person may well have been asking if you were feeling sick.
because he continued to say you looked under the weather.Another way of starting a conversation, without prying to deeply is to say "how you feelin" At that point you can go to what ever depth you choose.

It's a polite way of greeting someone when you meet. Of course, I know some, that will go through their whole history of aches & pain for the last 30 days, when asked.

Maybe they were being a doofus, or maybe in spite of the way you felt, you looked like crap. I once asked a fellow cancer survivor if she was ok because she looked tired. I could have bitten out my tongue and my motive was just caring about her. Try not to hold it against them.

Did this happen with more than one person? If not, just chalk it up to bad observational skills on their part, and forget it.
