No the area code doesn't depict where the card was bought, for example I bout a calling card last week and I live on the east coast, and i called my sister, which always lives on the east coast but it showed up as a west coast numer, the area code that shows up on yours or someone else's caller ID just depicts where the call is being made from. For example when you buy a calling card, you're pre-paying for a long distance phone call. So when you call the 1-800 number on the card, that number / location, is where your call is going to be made from, so it would show their area code and phone number because they're the ones actually making the phone call for you.

Are you aware of new procedures??? I used to use a prepaid AT&T card for long distance. The number displayed on the persons phone that I called was some number from Atlanta, GA. HOWEVER, lately, MANY cards and companies now display the actual number from where the call with the card was made from!!! I don't know if that was a decision of the card sellers, or a new law invoked. But several calls I have got lately from calling cards actually displayed their home number, even though they went through an 800 number card with a PIN number.!!??

There are maintaining services for some phone cards. If your card is alike, you can request call history records from card's customer service: calling dates, from-to, duration, and charges. And area codes as well.

Well, I use phone cards a lot and it is amazing. If you use a land phone your name and number will not show. It normally shows a different kind of number, but not your number. The number might not even make sense. It won't show your name nor your number.

Why? Are you hiding?
I don't think that it would. One other way you can call anonymously is buying a prepaid cell phone.
