Older drivers 'most likely to drink and drive'

Last Updated: 12:52am BST 22/07/2006

Nearly half of all motorists over the age of 25 indulge in drinking and driving, according to a new poll.

And it is 30-50-year-olds who are most likely to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol, the survey from Direct Line Car Insurance found.

Drivers from that age group also tend to drink the most units before they drink and drive.

The survey questioned young drivers on their parents' driving habits and found that 9 per cent of 18-25-year-olds said their mother or father drives over the legal limit, with 16 per cent saying their parents had been stopped and breath-tested by the police.

Younger drivers apparently take a firmer stance against drink-driving, with 47 per cent saying they would never drink any alcohol before driving.

Seventy-three per cent of these believe any drop of drink can affect driving ability.

Emma Holyer of Direct Line said: "In the 1960s the Government introduced a blood alcohol limit for drivers in the hope it would deter drivers from drink-driving and make roads safer.

"Our research shows that drivers view this law differently depending on their age group, with far more younger drivers agreeing it's fundamentally wrong to drink any amount of alcohol before driving a car.

"We are pleased to see many young motorists view drink-driving as socially unacceptable but we'd like to see older drivers setting a better example."
