You can still get an epidural .....but I heard the ink in your tattoo will catch fire if you get above 5,280 feet in elevation......so stay near sea level if possible.....

That is so not true. Okay, for one thing an epidural goes in the middle area of the spine, not the lower back. And the ink is put in that spot and does not migrate out unless massive problems occur. Your friends mom was trying to make her not get a so called "tramp stamp". That is just the nickname for them not that it has any standings. So no, no connection to a lower back tattoo and not being able to get an epidural. Doctors could care less about tattoo positions.

This same question has been asked at least half a dozen times in the last month since I started posting here! *There IS a search feature here people!!*
sorry for the rant...
No, it's absolutely not true! It's just becoming an 'old wive's tale' that people are telling youngsters in the hopes of scaring them out of doing something so permanent as a tattoo.
Besides...generally speaking, you don't NEED an epidural to give birth anyway! But that's another topic altogether! ;)

No, it's NOT true. Besides that most of my friends with children have had epidurals and have back pieces, it's just another urban legend. It's perfectly safe to get one as long at the tattoo is completely healed, but that being said you shouldn't be getting tattooed when you're pregnant anyway. And tattoo ink is not magnetic, I've known plenty of people with tattoos that have had MRI's and never had a problem with the MRI's or anything medical.

My cousin is an anesthisiologist (the doctor that administers the epidural). NEways, her and I actually discussed this subject before and she said this...you can get a tattoo but there are in fact some anesthisiologists that will not perform an epidural on you NOT because they are scared of damage to the body but they are concerned about messing up the tattoo and having the patient try to sue or whatsoever because of it. Most anesthisiologists will give you an epidural there even if you have a tattoo there...it will not harm your body.

that is not true an epidural goes into the spinal column where as a tattoo is affecting only the skin. But if anyone has concerns they should talk to their doctor about it but it doesn't not stop you from getting an epidural

I have heard this several times, but I have several friends who had tattoos on their lower backs, and some on necks, and one on the spine between the shoulder blades and they have received epidurals without problems. Unless this is a preference by the anesthesiologist?

There is no truth to this what so ever. The only thing preventing the person from getting an epidural is the person who doesn't want one because they think it will mess up their tattoo.

FALSE

I have a tattoo on my lower back and I had an epidural through the tattoo.

this is true I heard this also and I asked my tattooist and he said that if you had a tattoo across your back and you needed an epidural that it is possible for the ink to be pushed into the blood stream.
