If your friend is UA (unauthorized absence) from basic the simplest thing to do is go to the nearest recruiters office and turn himself in. In most cases such as his he will get an ELS (Entry Level Separation). He will lose all of the pay he has acquired and be processed out. It will be like he never was in the military.
Or he can go back and say he wants to finish basic and fulfill his obligation. In that cases he will lose all or most of the money he has earned, start basic over, but be able to put it behind him and move on with the possibility of earning an honorable discharge at the end of his tour.

If he goes back he will get discharged under a General Discharge or Failure to Adapt. These are given things like this. Had a few guys do this in my basic training at Fort Benning. I also did some myself when I got to my duty post. He hasn't been in long enough for this to affect him for jail time, so to speak. Best bet is for him to go back and man up and take the consequences.

First off, your friend better high tail it back to his command. The difference between being AWOL (UCMJ Article 86)and being a DESERTER (UCMJ Article 85) is the INTENT. One can be gone for 20 years and only be charged with being AWOL, but also can be gone 24 hours and be charged with DESERTION.
What type of discharge, if any, he gets is anyone's guess. If this is a pattern in his life, running away when things get tough, he has a hard row to hoe for the rest of his life. I pity any woman who marries him (or anyone else who RUNS AWAY from the military).

pass returned after Christmas(and tell him to have as lots relaxing as a threat), because of the fact it is going to be an prolonged time in the previous he can see his kinfolk, returned. If he left on June 1st, he's not AWOL. he's categorised as a deserter, so he's going to be locked up for awhile.

tell your friend he needs to report back to someone, anyone, even if it is a recruiter. the longer he waits, the worse the punishment will be. when i was in the army, there was a guy who went AWOL and all he got was an Article 15, which was extra duty, loss of pay, and loss of rank, no jail time or anything like that. but why run from the government your whole life? they will find him. be a good friend and convince him to report to someone.

He needs to come back on his own that way the judge advocate will be more likely to give him restriction to base instead of jail.

Best bet is to contact the local congressman/woman and explain. He can also appeal to the Governor of his state.

a simple speeding ticket will get him one day and he'll regret not turning himself in.
