VW GTI Owner here.
So far no one is exactly right. The Rabbit and the GTI share the same platform/Unibody/ understructure and the same basic sheetmetal but have differing suspension settings/wheels and drivetrains.
The rabbit is the regular version and the GTI is the sport version with a sport supsension wheels and transmission as well as a different engine. The reg rabbit and jetta ( the same car in sedan form) has a 2.5 liter engine, it only produces 150 horsepower. The GTI has smaller engine, a 2.0 liter engine, but it has a turbo charger system that allows the smaller engine to produce 200 horsepower. Thus it is a much faster and sprotier car when combined with teh lowered suspension and stiffer struts and wheels etc.
The price difference between comparably equipped cars is about 2000.00 dollars. The GTI comes standard with many nice features. If you get a rabbit and make sure it has allhte same eqipment except the drivetrain stuff there is not huge difference in price to the GTI.
A base auto tran 4 door GTI is around 24 000.00
a similarly equipped rabbit is around 22,000 when equipped like the GTi

It's also not just the different engine you'll get. For example, the rabbit doesn't even have vinyl seats as an option. You'd have to spend the extra cash just for that little bit of luxury. Also, my VW mechanic hypothesizes that since the rabbits have been re-re-named the rabbit, the quality of the vehicle might suffer. To be safe, I'd get the new GTI. To be safer (and more frugal), I'd find a five year-old GTI.

don't listen to the guy above. The GTI doesn't have a bigger engine. The Rabbit comes with a 2.5L inline 5 cylinder. The GTI comes with a 2.0L Turbo inline 4 cylinder. I am pretty sure 2.5 is bigger than 2.0.
The engine and suspension is the biggest differences. The GTI is a very sporty and quick car. Not to say the Rabbit is slow, it does have good get up and go.

I worked on the rabbit when it First came out. Great cars. The GTI is a souped up version of the rabbit. Bigger engine, more power, better handling, etc. Personally I would go for the GIT. But it will cost you more money. Insurance will be higher, etc.
One other thing. find some one that realy lives these cars to repair it. If you do not know how to do it your self.

They are both good cars but the GTI will cost approximately $10K more because of the Turbo engine.
