Recent Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AF lenses are made in China. I own one myself. This lens is a bit plasticky but it's well made and it provides great image quality.
Henry is talking about 'grey imports'. This has nothing to do with where a lens was made. Grey imports are a bit cheaper, and for this discount you give up the right to a factory warranty.
Regarding the comments that there is no difference between the f/1.4 and the f/1.8 versions... that's nonsense. The f/1.4 version is obviously half a stop faster and, more importantly, it's built to be used wide open. The 50mm f/1.8 version needs to be stopped down to about f/4 for good image quality. I love the 50mm f/1.4 and I use it all the time. The AF is fast and accurate, the image quality is fantastic, and the shallow depth of field can be used to great effect to isolate your subject.
If you don't mind manual focus lenses, you could consider the 50mm f/1.2 AIS. And if you also don't mind insane prices, you could even consider the Nikon 58mm f/1.2 Noct.

I'm not really sure about Nikon (Nikor) lenses being made in the US. Most of them are CHina, Japan, or Thailand. As long as they are made by Nikon (under strict quality controls), there should be no difference.
The 50mm 1.4 is a great lens. But I really see no difference between the 1.4 and 1.8. Furthermore, bith lenses are "old" lenses and dont have Extra Low Dispersion (ED) elements which the newer lenses have. This is the most important feature of newer lenses which make them far superior to non ED lenses.

Don't buy this lens!
Even this is a good lens, however, with the wide 1.4 aperture, you easily loose focus on your object face.
If you are confident that you can focus well, it's a good idea :)
There is slightly different about the place of making the lens, but overall, it's actually the same. Nothing be worried about this point my friend :)
Try to buy the 1.8D lens, which is ~ $150 cheaper, but with the same quality :)
Good luck
