I'd go with the schwinn just because i prefer Manitou over Rock Shox anyday. Both have mechanical brakes but hayes is a better known quality than tektro. Both are 24 speeds and both come with trigger shifters. I've never ridden either of the frames so cant give you advice on that. I had a Motobecane 400HT years ago as a spare bike and it was pretty nice... the 500HT is a higher model. They are french by the way, motobecane I mean. I'd look at what you plan on doing with the bikes later on. Do you plan to trail ride every now and then or really get into the sport? if you'd be willing to sped 100-300 more you can get a better known, higher strength, longer lasting frame from trek or giant or even specialized. All three companies are great for trails. If you had to chose, personally, i'd go with the schwinn for casual trail riding. Anything over casual, i'd get a slightly more expensive brand/company/bike. You can find Motobecane and Schwinn on ebay for like 300-500. If you are willing to spend that, go get yourself a Trek 6500 or higher or a Giant STP or Yukon or a Specialized Rockhopper.

I'm not a big fan of the Motobecane's or the Schwinn. I recently went through the same process and bought a Forge Sawback 5xx. What I found was that Forge Bicycles use better components; Mx2 Hayes which are better than TEKTRO's, they use DEORE and DEORE Shifters, better rims and hubs, also it was less money. The frames are all aluminum, lighter and all Forge Bikes comes with a lifetime guarantee. I bought my bike through target.com, but you might be able to get one at a bike shop. Or alternatively look for a used Trek 6000, same type of bike and components. I hope this didn’t confuse you. But if you need to decide between the Mesa and Motobecae, get the Mesa. This has better components and is overall better than a Motobecane. Best of luck!

both bikes are OK, but you could get more "bang for your buck" by looking at Specialized, Giant, KHS, and Trek...
