When there is a new co-worker/employee, who should be the first to initiate breaking the ice...the current co-workers or the newbie?

My opinion, the current co-workers. I never really questioned this untill I got my new job last November and I thought this was an interesting question.

Thanks for your input! :)

The coworkers should welcome the newbie & make them feel at home since they are usually a little nervous because they don't know anyone yet.

Always the Supervisor should break the ice. Remember in school if you were the new student or there was a new student and the teacher would introduce the new student to the class. Then the current co-workers are required to make the "newbie" feel welcome.

The current co-workers. The newbie is probably struggling to learn her new job and how to navigate her new workplace. It would be kind for her co-workers to be as friendly as possible.

Why nottake the initiative and break the ice yourself? Besides, the new guy buys breakfast tacos for everybody, lol.

I always introduce myself at least. Put yourself in their shoes and imagine how you would feel not knowing anyone at a new job.

The coworkers. Anytime you have an "outsider" the "insiders" should reach out and make that person feel welcome.
