Well, if you are planning on running on a pretty consistant basis, then you need to think of your shoes as an investment. Good shoes will still be cheaper than a knee replacement later.

I went to a running store at first, spend $80 on the right style of New Balance shoes. After that, I google the style, and can buy them much cheaper off the clearance racks of running stores that post their inventories online and ship across the country. Reduces the cost in half (even with shipping), and I know the shoes will fit.

You need to visit a regular shoe store and have them FIT you with the proper running shoe. Look in the yellow pages for a good shoe store and then go get fitted for a pair of running shoes.

go to a running specialty shoe and they will look at the width of your foot and your arch. they should be able to give you a couple of good choices for you. as a runner, i would definitely advise purchasing the shoes that fit the best, even if they are more pricy. your feet will thank you.
