They are still drinking and doing bad things. I wanted to become a city cop or a sheriff/ deputy ,but they advised me that I would have trouble with my families background. They want me to be a college campus cop or a park ranger or a security guard. My family does not want me to be a cop at all ,but I want to. What is your advice? Should I become a campus cop or park ranger or security guard? Or should I change my carrer choice?

You are not your sister, your brother, or your cousins. You have seen first hand how bad behavior can ruin lives. Be your own person! Do what you want to do!

I agree with the people here who say to follow your dreams. A good way to start is to study criminology at a college. That will not take into account your family's background at all, and you'll learn everything you need to know. If you do well, it will show that you are hard-working, honest, and committed. Then the law enforcement offices will take you more seriously. Perhaps you can do security or be a campus cop part time, or during the summer. It will be good experience, and help build up your resume. If you can show a law enforcement office that you are committed, they are not going to care what your family is. If we took away all the cops in the country who had some bad eggs in their family, we probably wouldn't have many cops left. Good luck!

You can still become a cop or sheriff with your families background. Your brother, sister and cousins made the mistakes...not you. I'm a cop and I have friends who are cops whose relatives get arrested all the time...Even my lieutenants relatives are pieces of crap...If that is what you really want to do, then follow your dream.

Don't settle. I'm confused on who told you to shoot for campus cop, etc. Was it one of the law enforcement departments or your family. If it was your family just ignore them. Obviously they aren't the right people to take advice from. If it was a department, ignore them too. The person who told you that was just blowing you off and their advice was wrong. I personally know several cops with the same background and it didn't stop them at all. If one department is giving you flack just go to another.

As long as you haven't been implicated in any wrongdoing (and yes, they will check) you should still be able to get in. You'd hardly be the first cop with a felon in the family tree. You should pursue what seems best to you, not what other people want. It's not like your family have been setting a good example of wise choices.

I think you should be what you want to be. If it's a policeman than be a policeman. You wouldn't be the first one to have a family history of crime. It's their history not yours. But, if you do become a cop there may come a time when you have to arrest one of them, or watch one of them get arrested, or even know they are being investigated and not be able to tell them.

it doesnt matter if your parents or siblings are trying to prevent you from becoming a cop because it is what you want to achieve in life. your parents are not the ones who are going to make your money for you. what you want to become in life is your decision not your parents.and by the way im in the same position because my dad is the one that doesnt want me to become a police officer because he thinks that i might get killed but i dont let it get to me because its been my dream to become a police officer since i was 4 years old and i am now 13, i think im old enough to make my own decisions.

You cannot choose who your family members are, or be held accountable for their criminal actions, so if you are clean, you can make it in law enforcement.
