Go here and check them all out. Click on "In-depth review" and "Read Owner Opinions" for each camera. Be sure to note that the reviews are many pages long so you don't stop after page one. Check the sample images, also. You can enlarge these to full size images if you click on the link below the picture. You will have to then put your cursor in the white space to the right of the picture and click once. After that, you can pass your cursor over the image and it will turn into a magnifier. Click it as a magnifier once and the image will go to full size and you can really examine the detail or look for artifacts like fringing or noise.

I put the Panasonic DMC-FZ7 in there, because it is a current model.

Still, choosing from among this group, I would tend to favor the Canon. Go to this page for image comparisons: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonyh5/page11.asp Personally, I find the Canon to be just a tad sharper.

Look at this page: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonyh5/page12.asp and you can compare noise at ISO 400. The Sony looks better, but the reviewer points out that the Sony has lost some of the detail due to heavy use of noise reduction.

Same thing at ISO 800: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonyh5/page13.asp

I don't know. It's a close call for me. The only personal spin I can add is that my daughter has had her S2-IS for almost a year and we are both very satisfied with it.

i will't touch upon the Sony or the Canon yet i will provide you my journey with an older sort of the Panasonic. i offered an FZ1 shrink returned in 2004 and alter into extremely delighted with the 12x zoom, the image stabilization (the long zoom is ineffective with out it), and the image intense high quality. i even have because of the fact moved directly to a DSLR because of the fact i mandatory a digicam with extra effective desirable low basic skill (A dslr and a super sort of dollars appropriate well worth of at as quickly as glass) yet carry the former Panasonic on a similar time as i don't opt to hold the digicam bag. additionally, one among my pals has a extra effective modern-day variety, i've got confidence this is the FZ5 and he incredibly likes it. All of that stated one among distinctive 2 would prefer to appropriate be extra effective desirable even with the easy actuality that the Panasonic is incredibly a robust variety in case you pass that direction.

All good cameras. Also consider the Panasonic FZ8.
Also, sony has TODAY launched 2 new cameras, the H-7 and the H-9, both with 8.1 megapixels, 15 x stabilised zoom, face detection 9 point autofocus, and the H-9 also has night shot.
