In order for imagination to be important it must start from a base of knowledge. An imagination not based in knowledge is bound to produce illogical consequences. Einstein used all of the physics of his day as a spring board to jump imaginatively into relativity.
Newton knew that the apple fell on his head (maybe just a story?). From this fact, this knowledge, his imagination jumped to the theory of gravitation.
Such imagination in turn produces more knowledge, and this additional knowledge in turn raises the diving board a little higher for the next venture into, you got it, imagination.

Absolutely, I want to make a living as a writer, and in that imagination comes first before knowledge.

yup coz imagination can produce knowledge [especially new ones]. What if Einstein didn't have an imagination? He wouldn't produce that 'super formula'

Sure, but it depends on how you use it. Imagination is the main thing that separates humans from animals. It is the thing that lets us plan for things that might happen, but we have never seen. It is the main thing that drives innovation.
But you need to base it on knowledge. It is easy to let it move into fantasy and not be a innovating force.

Yes! For one thing, we wouldn't have much knowledge without imagination. How would we be able to think up new ideas to test?

Yeah, I think we was.
All the Greeks and Romans who saw figures in the night sky had more on the ball than modern Scientists who "think" they found a planet around this star or know the distance to that star because using a triangle 0.000000000000000000000000001 as a base shows that star to be "x" light years away.
Yeah. Right!
