I always thought I was from German/Russian desent, untill my Dad started writing his life story. He dug deep into our history, and it turns out we come from Dutch desent. My Great Grandfather (Dutch) fell in love with a Minanite woman (German), wanted to marry her, but the strict Minanite church denied this union, because he was not of the community. Grandpa joined the church to be with Grandma, he had to change his last name to "fit in".My Dad pushed past the beginning of what we all thought was out place of origin to find more. So love is strong, so strong it can change history.

Absolutely.

Besides my immediate relatives (by that I mean my brother and my parents), my family isn't close at all. And that doesn't even consider "extended" family.

Perhaps that's more a consequence of how my parents grew up. They were never close with their parents and siblings, so I was raised without a strong relationship with my aunts and uncles and grandparents and cousins.

I barely know my mom's relatives (we only see them for my cousins' weddings, but none of them are likely to attend my brother's or mine), and her parents died before I was born.

I grew up less than an hour away from my father's parents and his brother, but we only saw them maybe once every few months; as I got older, the visits decreased to birthdays and holidays, and soon only Thanksgiving and Christmas. Again, I barely know my uncle and cousins and grandmother, although I do truly miss my grandfather, we had a good relationship before he died in 2000.

You probably didn't need that summary, but my point is that I know next to nothing about my family and family history because they aren't close with one another. The required open communication has never been there, so they've been reluctant to talk about any issues or news (failures or successes).

Sad? I think so, but it's not a mistake that my brother or I want to repeat with our children.

Yeah, I would. Cuz now there is no family left to tell me the history. My parents weren't too good about that sort of stuff. Found out my mother had been married briefly to another man (not my father) when I was about 35. Now my last sib died in November 2006. Who's left to ask about my father having 2 dependents (he had only married 2 months before he enlisted in the Coast Guard during WWII)? Was my mother's family ALL born in Canada, or only 3 of 4? There are only 2 aunts by marriage who are in their 90s and both have Alzheimer's. I have first cousins on paternal side I have never met. At least if it were available, it could be passed on as one saw fit. Now I am afraid it is gone forever.
