Dr Suess books were my favorite, and are my son's favorite.
Just to list a few:
Oh Say Can You Say (there is also a Dinosaur edition of this book)
The Cat in the Hat
Green Eggs and Ham
Oh the Places You'll Go
The Foot Book
One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish
I think children like these books because they rhyme, and they normally have pretty easy words that children can sound out if they are beginning readers.

I think that the books by Chris Van Allsburg are some of the best out there. If i ever have children there will be a copy of all his books just for them. The illustrations are really great and your son will enjoy the stories past kindergarden.
My favorites are: "The Sweetest Fig," "The Stranger," and "The Gardern of Abdul Gasazi"
There is another book called balloon farm that my dad bought for me one year at a book fair it's called Balloon Farm and Harvey Potter is the author.
The links in the sources list will bring you to pages that can tell you more about the books.
Also, you could always go to the library and let your son pick out books that looks interesting to him.
