My mom and I have a very open relationship. But most of my friends say they can't talk to their parents at all, let alone about sex. Why is this?

I think because if they don't talk about it they think it will go away. Alot of parents don't want to talk about sex I think because then they will get their child to start "thinking" about sex. Maybe they have a what I don't know can't hurt me mentality. It is better for the child to educate them and help them with sexual issues but some parents are very old fashioned and hope that their children aren't even thinking about sex let alone doing it.

Hello Mackenzie,
Just this past Wednesday afternoon, our group discussed
this exact topic. And our final conclusion (after two hours) was:

Most of today's parents aren't as educated about sex as their
sons and daughters are, because Sex Ed was not availble to them when they were in school. So, even if the teenagers DO
want to talk with their parents, they already have more knowledge
than their parents. And the parents are actually embarassed.

You're probably better off talking to the school counselor or your
family pastor (..or maybe even your family doctor..).

Most Americans still have the Puritan attitude about sex. It's ok as long as it's to procreate, you're married, and don't tell me about it. :p

Sex is natural and a lot of fun with the right person. Feel blessed your mother is open and able to discuss uncomfortable subjects with you.

Parents really do more harm by not talking about it to their child, sex is a good thing and should be talked about in the right way and time.

Churches teach that it's a sin. They also teach that if the child knows about it, they're more likely to do it. This belief keeps a lot of real information away from those who most need it.

maybe they think if they dont talk about it they wont do it. but in fact they are the ones that have sex at such a young age. I am open about any subject with my teenage kids.

my mom and I were open too. I tell her everything its great!

I think my mom wanted to tell me about sex so I knew, that I would be ready, responsible and prepared.

Some parents dont want to know that their kids are sleeping around, and they feel if they talk to them about it that it'll encourage them to go loose their virginity.
