i have been invited to a military commissioning ceremnony. the soon-to-be new military officer is my son's best friend from high school. we have stayed in touch with him including having just attended his college graduation. question, what is the proper thing to do in regard to giving or not giving a gift? if a gift is appropriate then any suggestions you might have are coveted. thank you for this service.

Whether to give or not to give, it is up to you.

If you do choose to give, I think money is the best gift. He can decide what to do with it and it can be use anywhere.
