On one of my molars I have a black dot/small indentation and I was wondering if that could be a cavity? It doesn't hurt at all, but I do drink a lot of pop. Does it have to hurt for it to be a cavity?

A new cavity doesn't hurt at all. It is a small dot/ indentation in your tooth. Go to the dentist. He will put a small filling in (painless) and then it won't turn into a BIG, PAINFUL, UGLY cavity.

You should try scraping at the black dot, If its still there then most likely it is a cavity. No it doesn't hurt when its that small, but once it gets bigger and deeper you start to feel sensitivity and pain at times. Go to your dentist and let them know about your small black dot. Sometimes the dentist wont fill the cavity but will keep a watch on it to see if it gets any bigger. I have a black dot on my molar and said she wouldn't fill it unless it got bigger.

A cavity starts off looking like chocolate trapped in the crevices on the surface of your teeth. It cannot be removed by brushing. It can be very sensitive when you eat or drink sugary foods or just chewing will hurt. If it is not treated, it can eventually lead to a root canal, which can sometimes be very painful.
