When I was 13, a friend of mine snuck up behind me in class and chopped several inches off a small section of my hair. At the time, I was trying to grow my hair out after a drastic (and overwhelmingly regretted) shortening, and didn't want to chop any off to make it even (it wasn't terribly noticeable at the time).

To compensate for that, for the past ten years mom has cut the sides of my hair on a slight angle whenever she trims it. Tonight, after she finished cutting it, I asked the usual questions,"how long is the rest of my hair now" and "has that strand blended back in yet". It HAS finally caught up with the rest of my hair, but -much to my annoyance- I have a good 9 inches of growth on that strand that are taggy and look like they've never been trimmed.

Now, mom says it isn't as obvious as I think it is (and really, I should listen to her, since she's the one who told me not to get that long ago haircut in the first place), but I can tell and I'm sure others can, too; especially when it gets tangled. Unfortunately, evening out the ratty section will put my hair a little longer than mid-back length; it’s just below my butt now, and I’ve wanted knee-length hair ever since I was a little girl (barring that brief period of “but everyone ELSE has short hair”). I measured, and it’s 25 inches from mid-back to my knees. Average hair growth being about half an inch per month, that puts me at a little over 4 years from my goal.

Any way to speed that up at all? I know drastic difference isn’t possible, but even just another quarter inch would take away so much worry. I heard that Biotin is supposed to help, but does it actually speed up growth or just make hair stronger?

Yes, we're still friends; the action wasn't as mean-spirited as it sounds; I'm used to people doing much worse. Three different people have:

put chewing gum in and then tied a knot around it

"accidentally" dropped a lollipop into my hair while getting off of the bus

colored my hair with pink and purple magic markers after I fell asleep in class

So, a little haircutting from someone I barely knew at the time was mild and easily gotten over.

I hope that "friend" isn't your friend anymore! That's terrible!

I used to have Rapunzel hair, too (down to the middle of my thighs). I got GUM in my hair in a very obvious place and tried for days to get it out without success. So, I had REALLY long layers cut into it. I didn't have to sacrifice the length, and the layers added movement and interest to it, and it looked really cool when I took the time to put it up on rollers. I liked it more than I thought I would.

Try the layers first before you cut it all off. And if you do end up cutting 10 inches or more, please consider sending it to locks of love. They make wigs for kids with no hair. You can find more info on them at www.locksoflove.org.

Good luck and best wishes for healthy hair!!

if you flip your hair and brush your hair like that (i dont think i explained it very well) it helps to make it grow faster. Also, buy shampoo and conditioner for split ends and hair growth.
