I have a mini dachshund that I am trying to sell. I have put her in the local paper twice and put up signs in stores. She is registered and spayed and wonderful with children. What is the problem? Am I doing something wrong? Any ideas? I really need to sell her; she was my mom's and I am selling for her. I don't have room for her myself. Please do not suggest ASPCA because we all know what happens there.

Just for the record, I am not trying to make money selling this dog. Therefore, I see no need to "get a real job". I am charging a fee so that I can ensure that whomever gets her really wants her and will love her like my mom did. The animal shelters and adoption agencies charge for their animals for the exact same reason.

If your mum bought her from a reputable breeder who screened their dogs of hereditary diseases, most good breeders have a contract that your mum would have signed agreeing to return the dog if for any reason she couldn't look after the dog anymore.
If not, you can take her to a Dachshund rescue group. You don't get any money for taking her there but they screen their prospective adopters thoroughly and make sure the dog will go to a very good home.
Or you could advertise. Post in the paper, on the Internet, make flyer's and put them on light posts, shop windows (ask first) etc. Put up a picture, what her name is, age, sex (if spayed), colour, size, temperament, personality, price, what she likes etc. Then just put your name, phone number and address. Small dogs are the latest "FASHION" now and many people will want one just to look cool and popular. Make sure that she goes to the best possible home, not to someone who can't take proper care of her or someone who knows nothing about the Dachshund breed and who just wants one for an accessory.

I think you should rehome her yourself and NOT bring her to a shelter or a rescue. I think that you should find out what the breed rescues are asking in your are for a similar dachshund age/health wise. And then simply go to Craigslist and put a link to her picture there and ask a little less as an adoption fee for the dog. You aren't going to get what your mother paid for her as a puppy but this way you can be comfortable about the home she goes to. There is no reason to use a shelter or a rescue to rehome a dog you can do that yourself. And know one knows better about the dog that you and/or your mother as had than you do or the home that she would be happy in.

Was she bought from a good breeder? If so, then your mother's purchase contract probably has in it that the dog MUST be returned to her.
If not, get in touch with doxie rescue. Small dogs are very in demand right now, so the rescue group can probably find her a great responsible home fairly quickly. http://www.dachshund-dca.org/rescue.html While you won't make any money off of them, it will ensure that she gets a good home and that she will be taken care of for the rest of her life.
You can also try placing a classified ad on http://www.petfinder.com but be sure to be VERY selective about the people. http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/guidelines_for_finding_a_responsible_home_for_a_pet.html has a list of helpful hints to finding a good home.
Good luck to you. : )

unfortunately people dont always want to buy an older dog. they want a puppy. they dont take into consideration the time and money with the training and vet bills and food that you have already put into her. check into some dachshund rescues if you dont have a no kill shelter. who knows, maybe you could find enough room to keep her yourself. sorry and good luck.

Is there a no kill shelter for dogs in your area? If so, please give them a call this week. Do you HAVE to sell her? Or can you give her away? Properly check out prospective owners, make sure she will be well cared for, and become the fun part of the family she will go to. Take care.

I don't see many newspaper ads selling dogs unless it's some kind of champion stud. It's always "puppy for sale" or "dog free to good home". It's weird to sell a dog 'cos you're selling someone you've known for some time.

Check your price.
People think mini dogs are a goldmine, when anyone can go down to a shelter and get one for about 90 dollars.
My guess is the price is off the charts...

You need to GIVE her away to a good home. Please get a real job instead of trying to make money off of a dog.
