I have an English Bulldog. She looks so mean and she has the best disposition. We have 11,7, &5 yr.old kids and she is awesome with them, too. We had a chocolate lab also who recently passed away and you would never find a better dog than her. It also has to do with how you raise them. Any dog will be a good dog if they're treated right and cared for.

A lot depends on where you live (apartment, house, etc.) and your lifestyle. You might look into a friendly, loyal dog, like a golden retriever. Ask your (new) vet and check out shelters. Explain the type of dog you are looking for and your living arrangements. Remember that dogs like labs need loads of exercise. Don't shy away from a German Shepherd; it's the raising of the dog that makes some dogs nasty. I have a Chow / Australian Shep. mix and some people shy away from Chow Chows. She has been raised and trained (don't forget the training!) properly and is one of the best behaved dogs around (according to my neighbors!)

These are a few breeds that you should consider:
Labrador Retriever
Golden Retriever
Dalmatian
Border Collie
Collie
Bulldog
Samoyed
Schnauzer
You need to take a lot into consideration when buying a dog. You need to consider how much exercise the dog needs, how much grooming is required to keep the coat healthy, how much space you need to keep the dog, how big the dog is, how much you need to spend on food, if you are financially stable to care for a dog etc. These are just some of the breeds that sound as though they might match what you are looking for in a dog.

No question about it....a Golden Retriever. They are unbelievably loyal and loving, intelligent, calm in nature and very family oriented. They are excellent with children/babies and other pets. (They are ranked as the best dogs for families with small chileren.) They are also easy to train and housebreak. Our Golden was housebroken within ten days and has never gone in the house in the seven years since. Not to mention how beautiful they are! Trust me on this...you won't regret it.

I think it depends on if you want an outside or inside dog.
Outside i would go with a lab. They do chew everything when they are young but are very friendly and family safe. They are also very intelligent dogs.
For inside I really like rat terriers, they are smart and easily trainable. They are not too small but still lap dogs. Dachshunds have great personality but are very stubborn.
