Keep your car doors locked at all times. Get out of your car IMMEDIATELY if someone carjacks you.
Similarly, if someone tries to kindnap you, never, ever get in the car. Do what you have to do, scream, run, let them shoot you, whatever. But never, ever get in the car, because they will kill you.
Don't open your windows for anyone who approaches the car.
Don't keep valuables on the seats, or boxes or anything that looks like it might contain something valuable.
Always, always, always check your back seat, and under the car before you get in the vehicle. Someone could be hiding in the backseat, or grab your ankles from under the car.
Walk around your car BEFORE you get in and check things out.
If you ever get attacked, and you have to step on their foot, aim for the shin, not the toes. You step on their toes you will just annoy them, you step on a downward angle to their shin, you will break their ankle.
Don't be afraid to step on the gas if someone tries to carjack you.
And remember, cars can be replaced, never risk your life.
Stay safe.

southern,
Carjackings can and do occur just about anywhere, so one must be always vigilant...
1. Talk to some police officers (or go to a police station) and explain to them that you're new in town...ask them the parts of town to avoid, and where carjackings have been common.
2. Situational awareness...do NOT walk around/drive unaware of your surroundings. I see too many folks driving with a cell phone jammed in their ear, not a clue or care in the world what's going on around them...prime carjack prey.
3. You're going to a Concealed Carry Weapons "Shall Issue" state...as is Mississippi. That means that provided that you meet their requirements, the state must issue you a permit to legally carry a handgun. I would have you at least consider it. It does NOT mean however, that you get the permit and a weapon and NOT practice...
4. Keep those doors locked!

Lock the doors, get a good alarm maybe even on-star I think they can track the car that way. Take all of your valuables out of the car. Get a cd player with a removable face on it. Get locking lugnuts for your wheels. If you have a garage use it. Most of the carjacking guys know what they are doing even if you take every precaution in the world it still might happen.

Yea, was carjacked 20 years ago. Got shot in the process. Sometimes all the precautions in the world doesn't prevent an act of violence. Albeit this country is more violent than it was 20 years ago.

Good precautions - Lock the doors. Get an alarm system on your car. Some cars have an alarm that goes off if the car is even touched, which will make it hard for anyone to get away with taking your car unnoticed.
Also, make sure your car can't be started with a screwdriver (long story) =]

Keep your doors locked. Also when you stop in line, like at a traffic light, leave plenty of room from the vehicle in front of you and turn your wheels slightly to the left. Then you can make a fast getaway. It can save your life by doing those two simple things.

Keep your doors locked at all times and windows up. Try to be aware of your surroundings at all times. If some one sticks a gun in your face I would give them the car, that is why you have insurance.
