Hi, all! I have a baking stone that was accidentally washed with soapy water. Big no no!

Any ideas on how to 'cure' it so I can use it again? I really don't want to have to buy another one when I had this one broken in so well. One person recommended I make a baking soda paste and let it stand in that for about 15 minutes and try using it again. Anyone here ever heard of doing that? I also emailed the seller of the stone and have yet to hear from them.

Thanks for any tips you can give me.

To those who asked, my daughter accidentally washed it with soapy water. Bless her heart, she was trying to help mom out and didn't realize soap is a big mistake. And, yes, it is a Pampered Chef stone. I didn't know they would replace it for that reason. Thanks.

yes, the baking soda scrub is recommended by Pampered Chef.

Heres what they say on their website:
As soap can flavor foods that are baked in Stoneware, it is important that you do not use soap or detergents to clean your Stoneware or wash in an automatic dishwasher using dishwasher detergent. Follow these steps for cleaning:

General Cleaning
Allow Stoneware to cool to room temperature before cleaning.
Soak Stoneware in clear, hot water to loosen baked-on foods.
Scrape off excess food on surface of Stoneware using the Nylon Pan Scraper (provided with Stoneware).
Rinse and dry thoroughly before storing.

Deep Cleaning
Prepare a baking soda paste by mixing 1/2 cup baking soda with 3 tablespoons water.
Apply baking soda paste to desired areas and let sit for 15-20 minutes. Scrape off excess paste using the Nylon Pan Scraper. Rinse and dry thoroughly before storing.

To season your Stoneware, grease and/or flour your Stoneware according to package or recipe directions for the first several bakings. After these bakings, your Stoneware will begin to season and greasing may not be required.

So, I would try the baking soda paste and then recuring/reseasoning and see if you can still taste the soap by baking something with a simple flavor so you can detect it. If still there, repeat, if it is still there the second try, you might be out of luck.

The problem with washing the stone is the soap residue that is left over. It's pretty hard to get it out. The person that suggested soaking it for a few nights is probably right. I do know that I just bought a muffin tin from pampered chef that is a stone one. They had them on sale this month, so it was less then it should have been.

If you do get the soap out, and you bake something the doesn't matter on it and the smell is gone, try baking some really oily something, like cookies or biscuits. That will start the process of curing it again. You can also put some olive oil on it. It just needs oil to cure it.

I think it is time to buy a new pizza stone, but just in case the following might work, give it a try first:

First, completely submerge your baking stone in warm, clear, plain water for 15-20 minutes. This should thoroughly saturate the stone with clean water and dilute the soap residue. Next, remove the stone from the water and place it on a pie cooling rack on your kitchen counter. Allow the stone to dry completely overnight.

Repeat the same soaking and drying process five or six nights in a row. After the last round, bake some pizza dough on the stone. If the pizza stone still smells, I'm afraid your stone is destined for the trash

Is it a Pampered Chef one? They will replace it for free. But how do you accidentally get soap on your stone? They are large, and not hard to spot.

You are not supposed to use soap ever. Get a new one.
