Go to http://images.yahoo.com and run a search for labrador retrievers and see if they come up and look like yours.

If they don't, then maybe he is part lab and part something else.:)

Remember, the breed of a dog does not make it a good or bad dog. Many dogs are wonderful dogs, and they are made up of many different types of dogs.

I call those Heinz 57s.

:) Maybe he's a Heinz!

In dogs, there are "pure breeds", of which a Labrador Retriever is one. The AKC (American Kennel Club) publishes breed standards which describe what the ideal lab is supposed to be like.

Yours is pet quality (not show quality) but it will still be pretty close. And there are pictures on the net of labs everywhere.

If it doesn't seem to match up with a lab, or any other purebred, then it's probably a mix (commonly called a "cross"). What it's crossed with is anyone's guess. Two or three mixes (like a lab and shephard cross, or a lab, golden, and rottweiller) are just called crosses, but by the time you get into four, five, six different breeds you just start calling them mutts.

Check out: www.dogbreedinfo.com and you can see pictures and show standards for most dogs, they even have some hybrid crosses in there.

The only way to be 100% sure of the dog is if it is a pure bred that comes with papers and a pedigree. This is a history of the dogs family line, like it's family tree. It shows the parents, grandparents and if they were champions in shows.

Most labs have a knot on top of the head, medium size ears, they are usually black, golden, or chocolate, and they are hard headed.

Labs look close to golden retrivers. (Kinda) Goldens have longer hair most of the time.
