so, i was watching cnn today, and apparently atheists make up between 1 and 3 percent of the population in america and are the least trusted minority group. i knew we weren't well liked; but, am i the only one who is kind of shocked by this?

gazoo - i couldn't tell by your post.... do you think the fact that comedians are making fun of atheists, is a good thing or bad thing? i think it's good... it means we at least are becoming more common and less taboo.

millajovo - first of all, the question was, "am i the only one who is shocked by this?" second, i can regurgitate whatever i damn well please... in fact i think i just threw up in my mouth a little bit. j/k
but seriously, the name of the segment this morning was 'atheist intollerance' and was about a couple of families who had been shunned, threatened, and/or evicted from their homes for their religious beliefs... or rather, lack there of. one of the families lived in the south, so i wasn't too surprised. what i was surprised to hear was that one of the "experts" (i assume, a devout christian) spouted the numbers stated above, followed by a belief that atheists bring it upon themselves by their rediculous antics, such as trying to remove 'in god we trust' from the dollar bill. i am not here to dispute the weighted news casts of cnn. i simply wanted to see what others thought of the two disturbing stats that stuck out to me.

We are one of the most misunderstood groups. People think we worship satan or have terrible moral values. They don't realize that most of us are decent human beings with a love for life and the lives of our fellow humans.

It is higher than that. It just depends on how you ask the question. The US is about 16% non-religious and a little better than half of that are outright atheists from everything I've seen taken together. Polls lie a lot. I have seen them as high as 25%. That one is one of the lower ones you will find.
I have been an atheist for 30 years now, and I don't make it a point to tell everyone for that reason. But I have sensed a change in the last few years. For instance it is becoming common for comedians to go after it. Before you had Kennison and Carlin and they both did it after they had a solid name. Now you see guys all the time. I see more people speaking out. I really think it is a backlash to the fundies overplaying their hand.

First off that isn't question it is a statement. What is your question?
Second don't catch 30 seconds of something on TV and regurgitate it on here.
This started over a month ago when so called God Loving Christians were on Paula Zahn's CNN show spewing their hatred intolerance for Atheists. Atheist leader Ellen Johnson with support of her followers demanded equal air time to defend Atheists from the bigotry remarks of The Christian leaders. Their time came on Feb 12th. to speak so now the Christian Coalition has rallied their members to say they do not trust Atheists as a whole in their communities. It is standard backlash for the 55 million viewers that tuned in to listen to the Atheist panel on Paula Zahn's show that aired Feb 12th. I believe the survey is over a year old and was proven bogus anyway.
TCC does not speak for America....They try to and they will tell you the do speak for America but they do not.

Well, you can probably thank Dawkins for most of that. He might be well read by the populatists, but he's as SCAREY as Pat Robertson and Jimmy Swaggart.
Remember SCIENCE gave us the A BOMB.
Had RELIGION been brought in on that one, they would have STOPPED IT and we'd NEVER have an Atomic Age and NEVER faced world iniliation threats on a DAILY BASIS.
Keep India and Pakistan in mind.
Keep IRAN in mind.
Keep OSAMA in mind.
If Miami or LA or SF or Washington or NYC goes up in a blaze and some Islamic Web site takes credit, don't beleive it.
SCIENCE has to take the credit for that one.
SCIENCE is your GOD and your GOD has NO LIMITS and NO MORALS.
Can you believe that OPPENHEIMER and his team actually thought the THREAT of the ABOMB would end WW2!
They NEVER actually thought we'd use it!
They ALL went to ROOSEVELT and TRUMAN and SAID don't use it!
What's the PURPOSE of some MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR TAX PAYER BOMB if you don't use it!
Athiests least trusted, when Dawkins starts a Non Profit SCIENCE foundation to let SCIENCE DO WHAT THEY WANT wtihout any recourse or consultation with the PUBLIC AT LARGE.
Darn right you scare us!
Doesn't it scare you.
Read HUXLEY
SCIENCE is on the BRINK OF THAT
Alpha+ politicians, scientists
Epislon- workers
That's the ULTIMATE solution to OUTSOURCING
A national population of BREEDED WORKERS who don't know enough to unioinize!
Dawkins will finance it.
SCARE us!
Darn right it does!
Free will. Free will to say NO A BOMBS.
Were ATHEISTS consulted on that issue!
Were YOU given a chance to VOTE yes or no on building an ABOMB!
DAWKINS is TOTALLY WRONG
It's not the RELIGIOUS we have to fear, it's the HIGH AND MIGHTY POLITICIANS who do things behind our backs and keep secrets.
NO MORE SECRETS

Uhmmm you are watching the fox network clone and expect to hear news?? They copy all that stuff and think they can appeal to the right wing to get more viewers by coming out with religion stuff. Did they say who the most trusted minority group is? Do people trust asians, blacks hispanics etc? You can see where this kind of retarded nonnews get you. Or was it a religious trust poll I think people are more leary of catholic priests than a random atheist. At least if you have children.

Non-theists actually make up more like 12% of the population. Don't trust CNN for good coverage of anything - they've spent the last three weeks bashing atheists. Check out youtube for more on that - especially Paula Zahn.

Some people still think atheists have no morals because they have no god. How completely ignorant of them.
What's sad is that these hateful people are the majority. Maybe if they spent just a little time to get to know an atheist personally they might change their tune.

regrettably, it is actual. There are people who would particularly vote for a Muslim than an atheist. a minimum of Muslims pay obeisance to some invisible skydaddy. regrettably, human beings will have confidence believers over nonbelievers, and that i don't understand why. human beings nonetheless have confidence the Catholic Chuch, with all its chicanery! a minimum of atheists don't party in super communities for the only objective of ripping individuals off with imprecise provides of salvation.

People think Atheists are Satans helpers or something. It's rediculous. It's a prejudice, and I hope people can learn to understand that. People also used to think African Americans were less trustworthy. Hopefully Americans can evolve past this primitive bigotry.

Actually, the lawyers are, but they weren't counted in the survey. And I guess that "least trusted" thing tells you how many brainwashed Christians are afraid of reason.
