I'm trying to get them to lighten up, and their anniversary is coming up soon, and yet I have no idea what to get them.

a thought.........
Maybe they don't want to socialize with other people. Maybe the time they spend together is the most enjoyable and the most cherished.

My husband and I don't do parties and big social events except family reunions, funerals and weddings. We don't enjoy parties. We don't enjoy loud talking and music. We have more fun going fishing together and just enjoying being together. A big party to us is going out to eat with the kids, their husbands, and our grandchild.

I could see a weekend at a bed and breakfast maybe or a weekend at a resort which would have things they enjoyed doing. That would allow them to choose how much they socialize and how much time they prefer to be alone.

Don't try to make your parents something they aren't and don't try to make them like something they really don't.

Well if they are anti-social, and prefer to stay home, as I do most of the time, then I would suggest a CD of their favorite singer, make them some kind of gift basket, here are a few ideas, so they can enjoy an evening alone
1. movie gift basket, fav movie or boxed gift set, microwave popcorn and their fav beverage.

2. Italian gift basket, sauce, parm cheese, pepperoni, box of their fav pasta , loaf of italian bread and garlic.

3. wine and cheese, crackers, candles and their fav movie or a new release you think they may enjoy.

4. make your own banana split, choc syrup, butterscotch syrup, crushed nuts, bananas, ice cream and cool whip and a jar of those cherries, and frozen strawberries.

hope i gave you some good ideas.

Do they like or have they ever been to a play? how about a weekend at a bed and breakfast? They will have meals with other guests but can go exploring on their own if they choose. Hope that helps

maybe a fun boardgame? not something like monopoly or risk..but some of the newer games: Deal or No Deal DVD board game, scene it, cloud 9.

maybe rent a cabin by a lake for a weekend?

movie night?

or maybe a "night out" right at home....you make them a meal and serve it and clean up afterwards.....and take out does not count.....something really special?

This won't solve the antisocial problem :-), but you could get them a scrapbook - my parents loved theirs! I used www.justynas-scrapbook.com
