It depends on the diocese or even on the individual parish -- but most of the ones at the church where I go seem to be starting out at around 10 or 11 years old.
My brother was an altar boy and I think he was around 11 when he started. Maybe 12.

It depends on the Parish or the country. My parish in Texas starts the training 4th grade which is 9 years old.
I have been an altar boy for a while and its an amazing experince. It brings one closer to Christ.

<> there is not any longer something "indentured" nor "involuntary" approximately being an altar server. Being an altar server is totally VOLUNTARY. And "under-elderly" by utilising what common? little ones are not too youthful to be altar servers, junior choir contributors, junior lectors, etc. <> little ones do it because of the fact they opt for to, no longer because of the fact they are forced.

In my parish, boys and girls who have been baptized and received First Communion can become alter servers in the fifth grade (about 11 years old).
There is no upper age limit.
With love in Christ.
