.. without causing trouble, that is.
I live in unincorporated county territory, and the county PD is about 15 miles away in the same building as the county prison (makes me a bit nervous to be in a place like that). I want to get to know the uniforms, badges, equipment, insignia, and names of the county police, so that I can develop a healthy relationship with them and so that I can be more confident about detecting imposters, but my conversations on the phone seem to indicate the preference of utilizing a PR/ombudsman cop by appointment. I'm worried that the PR cop won't give me the complete, or straight story (for the sake of the department's image), and that this disadvantage will work against my best security interests in stressful moments of action. I don't want to feel good about my police (they aren't omnipotent, omnipresent, etc.), I just want to know who they are and how to quickly verify their authenticity and know their basic, standard procedures. What should I do?

I don't know Nationalist, but I think it is probably due to the movies/media (Terminator 2, etc.). It's one of those things which reveals the stupidity of criminals, because they don't try to take advantage of us in that way. I'll try to let that issue rest in my mind .. thanks.

Contact the police department and request a ride along with an officer. They will usually allow anyone over the age of 18 to go on a ride along upon request (no felons). It's really fun too. You spend several hours (up to a full shift) tagging along with a cop on his day.

This will help you figure out what a cop is and how they act. You spend the entire shift in casual one on one questions with the officer and can ask anything you want (within reason of course) in a comfortable environment. You may even make a friend.

I am just curious why you would worry about police imposters? I assume you have a good reason, but just to note; regardless of the stories you hear this is very uncommon.

Good luck!

First of all have no warrants!
Join the area Fraternal order of Police and donate!
Ask to take a ride along- Shows the daily duties and officer candidates usually do this before and after going to Law Enforcement Academy.

Check into volunteering or reserve police officer programs!

We have a national night out every year. You can go meet the police, sheriff, national guard, fire personnel plus others. It's just a fun night with a lot of games and food out in our local courthouse parking lot.

Talk to the PR guy he will direct you to any publicly available material, then start reading and watching them because if you show this much interest in them they are going to be watching you. Joining or working with them on charity programs could keep their suspicious minds diverted.

Well, where i live i make meetings with the police and friends that live in my block so we can actualy get to know each other and the police too, so we can create a safe community, and work with other people that live arround you to report people that does not belong to the area, when they are doing something out or the normal.

Go to the nearest Police Headquarters in your area so that you could personally meet their personnel and be familiar with their operations.
