For a person who has never flown before, how hard would it be to learn the basics of helicopter flight control? Can anyone learn? Do you need large amounts of mathematical knowledge or a degree in aeronautics?

I could teach a gorilla to fly one if I had enough bananas. It's not easy but it's not that hard either.
A person who has never flown will normally solo a few hours before someone who is fixed wing rated. No habits to relearn.
A lot more coordination is required on a Helicopter than that of a fixed wing.
You need NO math skills in but knowledge of a whiz stick (E-6B) is nice to know. I would imagine everything now is computer related, but I took my training in the '60's when all that stuff wasn't in use.
You don't need a degree in aeronautics but a darn good knowledge of what keeps you in the air is certainly a good idea. Weather, navigation, rules of the air, Air Traffic Control, total knowledge of the A/C your flying, etc. is mandatory if you want to become an OLD pilot
As in anything, the more knowledge the better.

Is Flying A Helicopter Hard

Hello,
Almost anyone can learn how to fly helicopters, what you do need is an aviation medical Cat 4 for Private Pilot that is the very basic one, they it usually takes people about 20 hours of in flight trainning to be able to go solo as a student pilot. It helps to have math skills as this will make certain things easier and you don't need to have a degree in areonatics.
Good luck:)

anybody who meets the medical / age requirements and has the financial means can learn to fly a helecopter. There will be some areas of struggle for you as there is for everyone trying to learn something new, but don't let that stop you. Once you have the training, then all you need is the experience to become really good at it.

i tried it once in a realistic cockpit simulator.
It wasn't too hard for me but it may be due to some plane flying experience.(the guy there threw all types of weather at me and i still held on :) ) It seems rather difficult to come down to land at the correct speed so you dont hit too hard.
But really i have no real experience flying a helicopter. Not to mention, flying the real thing is definitely harder than the simulator.

there's more than just holding the sticks. a monkey can hold them, while it takes a PILOT to make decisions. controlling the helicopter is somewhat different from controlling the fixedwing. it also imcorporates certain "illogical" steps like INCREASING power to takeoff power when landing, or PUSHING the cyclics during the flare phase. quite obviously, none of wixedwing pilots can completely understand the HOVER. as a matter of fun, EVERYONE can land and stop afterwards, yet only helicopter pilots can STOP and land afterwards.

Its not the easiest thing in the world but its not hard. it takes some time to get the controls down. mainly just practice. <3

I sure love it

I was told by a pilot that it was like riding a unicycle on top of a basketball. Have no personal experience my self.
