..Just wondering, because I'm from the States and I've been all around Canada and the best place was BY FAR Newfoundland. Yet, it seems that all other Canadians s*** on Newfoundland on a almost daily basis and many have never even been there. In my opinion Newfoundland is the best part of Canada (one of the top five places in North America in my opinion)...I guess my question is, why don't Canadians take care and have pride in such a special place?

I'm a Canadian and spent a whole month on vacation with my family the summer after grade 4. I agree that Newfoundland is a wonderful place. The people are incredibly friendly, even more so than other Canadians, and the culture is so colourful. I don't know why some people have a bad attitude towards Newfoundland, although I've never encountered this attitude myself, aside from rather unflattering Newfie jokes. So don't despair! Intelligent Canadians who take pride in such a treasure do exist.

I am born and raised in BC. I have been to 6 provinces and 2 Territories. Newfoundland and the Maritime provinces are where I haven't been to. Not because I don't want to, I really do. I haven't been because they are the furthest, so would be the most expensive vacation and takes more planing and time.

Newfoundland was a separate colony. They were the last to join Canada in 1949. Although Canadians treat them as part of the family and welcome like any other part of Canada, there still is the tradition of jokes that we use to make about that colony next door.

I think being on the west coast we are a bit different. When I really think about it, we tend to think of the East coast as "more like us" especially in comparison to Central Canada. Added is the fact that many Newfoundlanders and other East Coast people immigrated to the West Coast. A natural move as they left looking for work yet living on the ocean reminds them of home and is what they know. Sure, lots of Central Canadians move here too, but they tend to be the ones retiring with money and forcing up the housing prices out of my reach.

Yes, I've been there - mainly around St. Johns. It had many cool things going for it, but I still don't think I'd want to live there.

It's not surprising that many Canadians have never been there, it's a bit out of the way.

I'm glad you enjoyed your time in Newfoundland.
I agree that Newfoundland is fabulous! Great people, absolutely beautiful scenery, lots of wildlife, lots of interesting history, great seafood, unique architecture...
I'm originally from Ontario. & I've lived or traveled in every province /territory except Nunavut.
Yes, not every Canadian has been to Newfoundland to enjoy its splendors. But that's part of the beauty.... it isn't crowded! (Don't forget... we have a huge country. much larger than the US. It's not easy to visit every part of our fabulous home.)
