My fiance's Escort sometimes pops out of 3rd. She thought she was just holding the clutch down a little, but i had it pop on me too. It's not everytime, and once it pops once, putting it back in it stays. PLEASE don't say she needs new sync gears.

CAUSE THE SINKCROES INTHE TRANSMISSION ARE GOING BAD AND THE 3RD GEAR INTHE TRANS IS GOING OUT I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY ESCORT AND I REPLACED THE TRANS AND IT DOESNT DO IT ANYMORE IT COSTED ME ABOUT $350.00 FOR THE TRANS AND $250.00 FOR THE LABOR SO ALL IN ALL IT WASNT TO BAD AND WILL BE WELL WORTH IT TO JUST REPLACE THE TRANS CAUSE A NEW ONE WILL COST ALOTE OF MONEY BUT THERE ARE SHOPS OUT THERE THAT CAN FIX THE PROBLEM FOR A PRICE THANKS FOR READING THIS AND I HOPE IT HELPS P..S I AM A 16 YR MECHANIC AND I KNOW THAT IT IS MUCH EASYER TO REPLACE A TRANS THEN TO REPAIR ONE THANKS.......

OK then she need the transmission rebuilt which would include the little things called syncronization colllars......It is either that or the linkage needs adjusting. Sorry man, why wouldn't it be the sync's..I tsounds like the sync rings are sticking, and the second time you put it into third it is lined up properly, a transmission oil change may do it.....but if not I don't know a better answer...

not engaging properly try to really push it in hard, if not gears could be slightly stripped causing it to pop out. once in third hold there and stab clutch again to make sure clutch is disengaging, good luck
