at a party, Jack, a male relative whom you see only once a year, comments: "you always look so good". Another (closer) relative Jane promptly interrupts to say "she just had a makeover" (which is totally untrue) what should you say to Jane? What should you say to Jack?

Thank Jack and then take Jane politely by the arm into the bathroom and ask her what her problem is. Let her know that you understood completely that her comment was meant to harm you. You must let people who play these kind of games of "meaning you harm" in ever-so-politically-correct tones of voices that you will harm them back. I usually glance over at the toilet and then at their heads in an "ever-so-politically-correct" threatening way. People will increasingly prey upon you if they are not stopped and dressed down for their aggressions against you. It's not cute. And, remember this, if they speak so passively-aggressively against you to your face, think about what they are doing behind your back. One thing that I've found EXTREMELY effective as a comeback in these nasty moments is to smile secretively and lean into Jack, for example, but say for all to hear, "Oh, don't believe her. Actually, I'll make a deal with you. I won't believe HALF of what she says about YOU if you'll promise not to believe half of what she says about me, OK?" THEN have that assertive moment with Jane in the bathroom.

I'm the last person in the world who'd ever get a makeover, and anyone who knows me should know that -I don't care about what I look like, never use makeup, avoid hairdressers, etc, etc- so I can't think of any other reaction than to burst out laughing. I certainly wouldn't even for one second think Jane could be serious!

Reply to Jack: Thank you! You are looking well also. I'm sorry but Jane is mistaken, I have not had a makeover.
Reply to Jane (in Jack's presence): Jane I believe Jack was addressing me and I am fully capable of answering for myself, especially when your answers are incorrect. I will thank you to reserve your opinions to yourself unless asked directly for them.

Say thanks to Jack. And point out to Jane that no you haven't had a makeover but thank her for the compliment. And smile.

Just look at her. Stare her in the face. She'll get very embarrassed, and maybe she'll appologise.
If not, she's not worth your time. She's jealous of you.
