Like a human eye, a dog's eye features a retina at the back, which is made up of two kinds of photoreceptive cells-rods and cones. Rods are sensitive to light itself, while cones sense colors. In our eyes, we have cones that sense red, blue, and yellow, which are the primary colors, and of course any combinations of those colors. Since we are diurnal(daytime-active)creatures, we have more cones than rods, which is why see well in color, but have lousy vision in the dark. Dogs, on the other hand, are decended from nocturnal predators-wolves-so they need very good night vision. However, there's only so much space on a retina, so they have far more rods for sensing light than color-sensing, so whatever color vision a dog has is very limited. With us, we've sacrificed the ability to see well in the dark, unaided, for the ability to see colors well, but with dogs, it's just the opposite. Dogs DO see some colors; they do not, as once thought, see merely in shades of black, white and gray-but their color vision is limited compared to ours.

They are definitely not color blind! About 30 years ago that was the theory but not any more.

I was told it had to do with the cones in their eyes, they don't have the same or as many as humans and that's how they know they are color blind... I think..

Most dogs are able to distinguish between red and green but not other subtler colors.
The ability to see colors has to do with cones in the eye.

i heard they really can see color. and it makes sense too because i know for a fact my dog likes the color purple she always goes to pet stores and if she sees a purple toy she'll grab it up lol. so it can't be the scent. i heard they just can't see colors as well as people kinda like they're duller.
