The best place to find different community service opportunities would be your local volunteer center. Volunteer centers provide you with a connection to many diverse non-profit organizations and volunteer opportunities in your local community that meet real needs and match your interests. They can provide you with one-time, short-term, or long-term volunteer opportunities.

Here are some links to find your volunteer center:

As volunteer centers connect with many non-profit groups, they can direct you to your local animal shelters to adopt a pet. My volunteer center works very closely with one of the local cat shelters.

Good luck!

Look in your local yellow pages for the humane society in your area. There may be a city or county animal control listing, and the ASPCA or a local Society for the Prevention to cruelty to animals. There are Cat protection leagues and exotic animal rescue services. This answer is for both questions, shop for a pet through the non-profit organizations as you will be lifting a burden when you take a dog home and maybe you could volunteer for the shelter to care for animals or take potential owners on tours through the facility. Maybe you have a gift for fund raising or just an ability to talk your friends and family int buying one extra bag of dog food a month to donate to the animal shelter.

Hospitals are always looking for people and there are many websites that have search engines for your town. For a pet contact the ASPCA or do a search on the internet.
