In a full up conventional war ' Cav scouts have a risky job.

In Iraq they have been operating in a manner similar to combat MPs. Although the news media plays up our casualties over there - the fact of the matter is that the leading cause of death for US soldiers is automobile accidents.

If he is a Cav scout - I expect him to be getting a Stetson the first chance he gets.

Cav Scouts! Woo-Hoo! Yeah, I've heard that it is the riskiest job in the Army in regular, large-unit combat (Scouts are always at risk - their job is to go find the enemy!).

But in Iraq, I wouldn't worry too much about it. People over-emphasize the danger in Iraq. You're safer in Iraq than you are on a US Highway. Death rates in Iraq are lower than they are during peace-time due to training accidents. (Link attached)

Yes, there is risk - But he's surrounded by the best trained and best equipped troopers on Earth. The Surge is doing a great job reducing the risk (violence already down 80% with only the 1st of 4 Brigades in place), and if he IS injured, he's surrounded by an incredible medical establishment for treatment - Far better than if he were to be injured in the US.

Be proud of him. I'm a brand new 15U (Chinook Helicopter Repairman) in the Reserves, shipping for BCT in about 5 months. Cav Scouts have B@!!s!!! You've got a good one there.

Hooah!

Obviously he's in combat arms if he's in Cav, so he'll be a bit more close to danger than say a cook. It's trying times and those people out there are no joke, but just stay supportive and give him another reason to return home safely and hopefully all will come out Ok. Good luck to you and he.
