In certain parts of Latin America it means a FRIEND.
It is used in Venezuela, Columbia, countries in that area.
It is also common for them to say "brother", in english, with a strong spanish accent.(i.e., mi pana, mi brother)

Depends on what language you're talking about.

In Puerto Rican Spanish "pana" is used in much the same way as American English "pal" and "buddy" , British English "mate", Canadian French tchomme and Parisian French copain etc.
Mexican Spanish speakers would probably use just "amigo."

In Romanian, pana means "the feather" from Latin penna.
