Have you checked to see what organizations may already be doing work in your area? It may be easier to collaborate or make new programs with them than to start your own non-profit. Some suggestions might be to contact your local United Way, homeless shelters and churches.
If there are no organizations in your area and you want to start your own there are many Internet resources to guide you, but I highly recommend contacting an attorney to assist you. Some legal aid non-profits or small business advocacy groups may be in your area and might provide this service for free or reduced cost.
Good luck whatever you decide to do. I work in mental health advocacy and have seen how addressing mental illness and addiction in the community can really help reduce homelessness. You may feel like one person cannot make a difference, but they can. It takes passion and baby steps - but you can do it.
You can also build a small army to fight with you through the creation of support groups.
People often look away because they don't know what else to do. So they ignore. Even if all you do is educate the public on the problem, you are doing a lot. So keep talking and asking why this isn't being addressed. Write your leaders often and have others write with you.
Some days you may feel nothing is happening and your attempts are in vain - but the works we do as advocates are like seeds. We cannot always tell that we are getting through, but like seeds under the ground the work is slowly growing and taking root.
So keep faith - in yourself and in your work

Yeah, it's really sad. Our country can spend billions on a war, yet not have sufficient funding to take care of the mentally ill. Most homeless people have an issue with mental illness, whether it be depression, alcoholism, drug addiction or schizophrenia.. Contact a county agency regarding starting a foundation. As far as funding. You might want to contact some major companies. Good luck!

You may do well to volunteer at some local shelters to learn more about what is needed. I think some people don't turn to the shelters because they cannot comply with the rules (so the sickest get the least help). Another place to check with could be NAMI.org- the national association on mental illness-they deal with family members trying to get help for relatives who lack insight into their mental illness. they may have some homeless programs you could look into. Good luck, obviously your help is needed!

If we all ask ourselves would you leave a pet out in the cold with no food or water then why is it okay for a son, brother, daughter, sister someone we know to go without basic needs. I'm far from a smart person, but I do know God wouldn't want this for any of his loved ones and thats all of mankind and his creatures.
