My dog (a 10 month old male cockapoo) seems to be fine (still very playful and active) but has not been eating or drinking as much as he used to. The main difference I have noticed is that he seems to be having a harder time eliminating (constipated), and I guess it's because he hasn't been drinking as much water- therefore he must be a little on the dehidrated side. I don't know how to encourage him to drink more water (I tried to take him to the water bow but that does not help much). Any thoughts? Is there such thing as a laxative for dogs (to help him with his constipation)? Thanks!

Have the vet give him a good check over and make sure there are no other issues causing this. Animals don't usually go off food and water unless something is wrong, and of course they can't tell you what. The vet will start with looking at the dogs mouth to make sure nothing is wrong there (bad tooth, splinter) and check everything out with the rest of the dog (thyroid, blockages, worms). If the vet says there is nothing wrong except not drinking enough water you can add a bit of beef broth to flavor it. If the constipation is really bad they will have stuff to use to get things moving (enema, or laxative)

Hey I'm knew to this yahoo account thing but I came accross this question and I thought I'd let you know what I think. I worked at a Vet clinic in college for two years and this was a common in a lot of animals. The problem that you should worry about it that he/she isn't eating or drinking...that's not good. The best thing to make sure nothing is wrong is go ahead and go to the Vet and have them check him/her over. I saw too many times that people waited too long to bring their pet in and then just out of now where they were feeling really bad. The Vet does have a laxative medicine that they can get to help in case that's the problem. No way to be certain unless you go to the vet. That's my advise...

I am not a vet, but that is a good observation you have. I think it might be good to talk to the vet to gather information while the pup is still seeming fine. That way you might avoid a scarey and uncomfortable time for both of you. He might be a little bit under the weather in some way, I know I have had animals that were sick and it was hard to encourage them to drink more. So ask the vet now while there is not an emergency.

You need to go to a vet with your dog.
