It's to fix a cavity in your tooth, which is an area which has been rotted away. The dentist will give you an injection in your mouth next to the bad tooth, and then take a small drill and drill away the rotten area. Then he will fill the hole with a filling, which will either be silver or white in colour. It sounds scary, but it really doesn't hurt much.

A filling is a material that is placed after decay is removed from your natural tooth structure. The filling material will most likely be amalgam ( a metal based filling material) or composite ( a white filling material ).
Fillings are usually painless and quick. If the decay is deep or close to the nerve of the tooth, you may experience hot or cold sensitivity for a few days or weeks. Nothing to worry about though. This will subside. If it doesn't subside in a few weeks, call your dentist to have that tooth evaluated again.

A filling is when you have a cavitie in your tooth and the dentist drills into your tooth and trys to fill your tooth up again.

Filling in dentistry terminology is basically taking out the cavity or the decay on the tooth and filling it out of either a tooth colored filling which is called a composite filling or also a silver filling which is also known as amalgam fillings. so thats what they meant by filling then
