It is already the top 35 and I think that is the dumbest most pointless rule in the world. It isn't fair that one car just because they are in the top 35 then they get in. I understand Champion provisionals, but if you can't make it in you shouldn't race. If you don't have the provisionals you aren't in. That is how I feel about it and think the top 35 should go away. People that are in the top 35 have to race in every week and if they are a tick behind they don't get in the race and yet they don't get a chance to get out of the hole. One of the dumbest rules in NASCAR. To this day I still blame Scott Wimmer and the whiner of his rookie season. That is when it started was the week him and Riggs didnt get in the race. Riggs didn't whine because he knew he wasn't fast enought, but not Wimmer.

I don't like the top 35 now or the idea of 25 or 30. It sends a mixed message. NASCAR is suppose to be the best 43 cars going at it but with this rule maybe the best 43 aren't in the race. I don't like the Champ Provisional either. I understand why it's there but having to watch DW fall a lap down in 3 laps at Atlanta in 2000 was enough to turn me off of that. Make it the best 43.

It has nothing to do with racing. It all has to do with economics.
Corporations run NASCAR. Home Depot, Budweiser, DuPont and many, many others would take their money elsewhere if there cars failed to qualify on a regular basis. I hate this as much as the next race fan, but it is the truth.
What I would love to see would be a qualifying session, then based on everyones qualifying time, invert the order, split into 3 (or 2) qualifying races, and base the 43 car field on the finishing order of those three races. It would give more exposure to all the sponsors. It would make for great racing every week. Maybe give the past champion 3 provisionals for the entire year. Something needs to change.
Take back NASCAR !!!!

Personally I think that rule of the top 35 in Nextel Cup points and top 30 in Busch and Craftsman Truck points guaranteed starting spots in the races is the dumbest idea ever. NASCAR created that rule for one reason only--THE SPONSORS!!! My feeling is that if you were not quick enough that day, you go home and work a little harder trying to make the next race or the next race at that track. Just ask Greg Biffle when he did not make the Las Vegas race during his rookie season in 2003, or Scott Wimmer and Scott Riggs when they did not make the fall race at Atlanta during their rookie season in 2004.
I absolutely agree with the idea of taking the fastest 43 in qualifying. Screw the top 35 rule, the provisionals, and the past champions provisonal! Take the fastest 43 drivers and turn them loose for 500 miles/laps. Dave Despain from Wind Tunnel highly advocates that idea thanks to several callers who want to see that same idea happen as well.

The Top-35 rule is very unpopular, and the point of qualifying should be to kick out the slowpokes and leave the 43 faster cars to race.
However, this rule only came out because of the fact the NASCAR didn't want to make the bigger sponsors unhappy if their drivers missed the race, and it happened when Scott Riggs and Scott Wimmer missed a race a few years back, knocking Valvoline and Caterpillar out.
So really, this rule is for the big sponsors, so it won't be easy getting rid of this rule.

I also think that the top 35 rule is dumb.It should be the fastest 43 cars no past champion. But if NASCAR want to guarantee some spots just let them use the ones that made the Chase For the Cup.

NASCAR should go back to the "pre-modern era".That's when the fastest 43 (actually it was between 36 and 46) quailified. No free passes,no top 35,no past champion. You go out get your lap and just hope it stands.
GET RID OF THE FREE PASSES!

I think the top 43 should be in the race and all the rest go home because if you can't race your way in you aren't going to do very good anyways!!

Unload 'em....fastest 43 run....the rest go home. Maybe make a consession for the defending champ, should that ever be an issue.
