I'm assuming you have a spinning reel. With a spinning reel, the line goes under a roller at one end of a wire thing (it's called the "bail") and then up towards the guides on the rod. To cast you hold the line with your finger, open the bail (turn it over), then throw the weight (lure or bait & sinker), letting go with your finger at the right time.

Anyway, I found a picture of a spinning reel with the line on it running under the bail. It's at http://wdfw.wa.gov/fish/salmon/graphics/howtocatch/tide4.jpg
(by the way, the photo is upside down -- you hold the reel under the rod and crank with your left hand.)

Without knowing what kind of reel you have it's a little hard to answer this question. I'm assuming from the way the question is worded that you have a spinning reel. You need to open the bail on the reel before you feed the line through the guides. The bail is the wire with a line roller that goes about half way around the outside of the spool. You can manually flip the bail back or the bail spring will close it when you start to reel and the line will wind onto the spool.

dose your reel have a lil clip on the side of it? it should be red or something like that, because if it dose then you should tie a not on the line then clip it on to the clip and then start reeling in the line. If you dont have a clip you have to tie the line on the reel but you have to do it the right way or it will keep spinning. go to in-fisherman.com and it will show you how to tie the line on your reel.
good luck and happy fishing
