What we perceive with the eyes is processed by the mind, so yes. Have you ever looked directly at something like, for instance, a plastic grocery bag stuck on a twig and seen an exotic creature if only for a moment? If yes then that was a misinterpretation of the mind processing the image. A lot of people have seen many, many misinterpreted images over the millennia.

An eye is an organ of vision that detects light. Different kinds of light-sensitive organs are found in a variety of organisms. The simplest eyes do nothing but detect whether the surroundings are light or dark, while more complex eyes can distinguish shapes and colors. Many animals, including some mammals, birds, reptiles and fish, have two eyes whose fields of vision largely overlap, to allow better depth perception (binocular vision), as in humans; and others are placed so as to minimize the overlap, such as in rabbits and chameleons.

I would suggest trying "visual illusions" and "hallucinations" in yahoo search to gain more scientific description of some of these phenomena. If you are, however, having visions in the religious sense and are just curious I would go to a practitioner of your favorite religion to get an explanation. Don't tell too many people about them as it is not considered normal in this time to see visions. In some countries and states you can be committed to an asylum if others consider you a danger to yourself and others.

You can only see things truly with the rods and cones of your eyes. Even there though, you have all kinds of inaccuracies.

"Seeing" other things, as in the belief in something intangible, is not related to sight. Ask a Philosopher/Cognitive scientist about that.

reflections in the soul's emotional structure lead the mind to imagine things that it's not physically seeing. if the communication is very direct an exact image that you've never seen before can be forcedly imagined.

Belief and faith tell you it's so. Whatever it is you believe in. (Hope all comes out well in the bathroom...!)
