This collection of sayings, most of which are peculiar to Luke, focuses on the total dedication necessary for the disciple of Jesus. No attachment to family (Luke 14:26) or possessions (Luke 14:33) can stand in the way of the total commitment demanded of the disciple. Also, acceptance of the call to be a disciple demands readiness to accept persecution and suffering (Luke 14:27) and a realistic assessment of the hardships and costs (Luke 14:28-32).
7 [26] Hating his father . . . : the similar saying in Matthew 10:37. The disciple's family must take second place to the absolute dedication involved in following Jesus (see also Luke 9:59-62).

I do agree, but there are reasons why. If you like reading the Bible, there are verses that seems contradicted to each other.
You find one that said, if you do love your mother and less to me, you are no use.
Which meant sometimes, christian people use their family as an excuse of not following Christ mission of loving other people whom might need more help than your well established, rich or healthy family.
There is also another verse that says love your mother and father and you will leave longer on earth. Which meant, some people end leaving their family to do the work of God and then ended up neglecting or abandoning their parents or family, when they are meant to stay and look after their family.
There are those whom called for their families, and there are those whom called to do the work of God. God will not ask someone to abandon their family when they need you the most.
So, in saying that, we all have different perspective or view of life, and the Bible was written to meet all kind of view and all kind of lfe. Some verses are speaking to specific people particularly in what they are doing, not necessary all of us at that point.
The verse you talked about is aiming at those whom use family as an excuse of not helping when they should have helped the mission of Jesus, that is to love your neighbour as you love your self.
Hope this help.
Cheers

26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
That is your scripture, but this gives you some insight
7 And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them,
Jesus was in a disseration with the Chief Pharisee and he spoke this whole dissertation about a man having a lavish dinner and inviting people to come and each of them made some excuse and so he sent his servant out to chase them away.
And that is where 26 comes in.
It's about what comes first in a person's life. In this case it's Jesus. In a workaholics case it's work, ask any wife or kid who has missed things because dad is stuck at work until midnight.
So I guess any doctor who misses dinner or his wife's birthday to do open heart surgery on a dying man hates his wife.
This is what you are implying.
Did you know Communism says the same thing. If you are on vacation and it's your birtday and it's a holiday like May Day and it's freezing outside and you're a water worker and the pipes burst outside at the corner near your house at midnight, you are supposed to get up, go out and fix it on your own because it is your obligation to your Comrades and the State to serve the interests of the whole instead of the one.

It means to be true to your beliefs regardless if your family disapproves. If a family member commits crime or sin, and it could be mother or father, you are not to go along with it. You must put God first in your life not your family. Back then a lot of people were pagans and people had to be part of a pagan family but not adhere to their beliefs. This causes abandonment BY the family oftentimes. Families are not perfect, at least mine isn't. I have to do what is right even at the expense of my family.
Hate? Jesus was speaking metaphorically. He also said to cut off your hand if it offend thee but not many take that literally.

Hey there.
Yes, it's pretty shocking to read how Jesus condtradicts his own teachings, isnt it? Well, no. He's not doing it.
The New American Bible explains, "The disciple's family must take the second place to the absolute dedication involved in following Jesus"

Ask Jesus! Why are you asking us mere mortals about what Jesus himself said?
I couldn't find anything referencing what you ask, but also don't forget that humans have made mistakes in translation errors.
Perhaps you should contact a local theology professor at your university if you are so confused or concerned about the context.

NO. He is saying . He is Lord of Lords and King of Kings.
And the point is . He didn't want them to get the big head and think other wise. And u need to read the whole chapter of Luke and not just a verse or two. I'll be praying for you.

No, that was Paul's interpretation of what Jesus said. Paul was a very jealous, vindictive man. Look how he talked about Mary Magdeline, because she dared to be friends with Jesus

Well Jesus commanded them to hate there family because In comparison to ones devotion to Christ, one's familys ties must be secondary . This does not set aside Jesus other teahings to love ones enemies ,to honor father and mother, and the like. It does highlight that obsulute royalty to Christ in Paramount . even though in many societies including the one in whichJesus taught, as well as many today, following him invoves presicly the-either or this verse sets up

Luke 16:25-27
25Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple. 27And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
Jesus is saying that when you decide to follow him, you are on a mission where you might even have to forsake your family and friends. He is saying that you might even have to forsake your own life. People have been known to sacrifice for great causes.
