A book has been written on this subject by a medical doctor. I can't remember the name of it, but here are two alternate online references that might help:
A Physician Analyzes The Crucifixion, by Dr. C. Truman Davis

Medical Aspects Of The Crucifixion Of Jesus Christ, Compiled by David Terasaka, M.D.

Initially He suffered hematodrosis(sweating of blood). Then later He suffered completely horrific beatings that would have killed the average man ten times over. The Romans literally tried to kill Him at the whipping block. They new that if they succeeded the possibility of later Crucifixion would be null and their work day would end sooner. Finally just a willingness to give up His Spirit was the cause of death.
No amount of torture or crucifixion could ever kill Him. He died willingly of His own accord in obedience to the Mission set before Him.
I Cr 13;8a
Of course suffocation and the filling of the lungs with fluid happened as mentioned by earlier respondents. But His death was only at His discretion.

First of all, Jesus DID NOT die on the cross!
He died of Old Age!
Is that medically descriptive enough for U?

Hanging on the cross causes the lungs to fill with fluids. He actually drowned. There is also a part of the story where a soldier stabbed him in the side with a spear. So if drowning didn't get him, the puncture wound(s) did.

Read Lee Strobel's book, "The Case For Christ." Hank Hanegraff has one out titled "Resurrection".
I own the second but haven't read it yet. But I give a BIG thumbs' up to Strobel's. I thought it was very well researched.

At least you BELIEVE in Him.
He arose on the third day--and He lives in my heart!
You DON"T need a medical description--you need JESUS Himself!

As I recall, didn't they break all his bones.
That's called death by mass trauma.
