I just make enough money to afford my rent every month at the moment, and and I've had a letter from council tax saying I owe £800! I don't have it! Will they fine me or put me in prison if I don't come up with the cash? I've applied for benefits but I dont have a job that has a set amount of pay so I couldn't answer any of their questions.

married with no children whoever you are, how do you know my myspace? I pay tax like everyone else I just need a little help affording my council tax right now. Im not 'begging for money' i was asking for financial advice on how I could pay. I have photos on myspace and songs because im a singer/actress. I wrote the songs with friends and the photos i needed for my portfolio, everyone networks on myspace thats what its there for. Obviously you're not going to tell me who you are or why you were on myspace, but maybe you could tell me why you're hurling abuse at someone for no apparent reson or why its a problem for you me having songs and photos on myspace? If I know you then have the guts to tell me who you are. I've tried very hard not to sound annoyed or bring in personal comments.

Inquire about free legal counseling. Its offered by several services, should be a simple Yahoo search with your postal code to find. Speak to a lawyer about the issue. He may have several different pieces of advice, and will probably be able to negotiate on your behalf.

Depending on your personal circumstances, taxes can usually be paid over time if you can prove you don't have the amount that you owe. Theoretically, they can get a judgement against you, but they (the tax collectors) aren't in much better shape than when they started. If you can't pay, you can't pay.

Prison is almost unheard of for amounts of that size unless you've acted fraudulantly concerning the matter. Even then, they won't get much out of you if you're in prison, so its in their best interest to reach some sort of settlement with you.

Getting legal advice, however, is your first and best step. I really hope this helps.

Things seem tough in england. I've never heard of council tax before in this country. Have you approached the tax people about your circumstances and what has been their reaction? Is there someone you can borrow the money off. Are you living alone in an expensive apartment or sharing? Consider sharing if not. Are you living beyond your means? Time to work out a budge if so. If you are living as cheaply as possible and you cannot find a higher paying job then you could contact your local member of parliament to let them know the 'dire straights' you are in to have your taxes deferred possibly. Maybe move back with your parents or other relatives until things are sorted out.

If you are old enough to live away from home you should be old enough to pay your own bills. It looks like you are on here begging for money. Try spending less money on photos for your myspace page or recording sessions for awful songs.

Look on your local council's web site under council tax - they will have a Q&A page undoubtedly with a question like 'I can't pay my council tax bill.' Grown ups tend to telephone people who send them bills that they can't pay and negotiate time to pay. You can't get out of paying this money and you shouldn't. The bill is for collecting your bins, cleaning the streets and for police/fire/ambulance services.

If you ignore your bill then they will take you to county court and you'll get a CCJ against you.

I'd get down the local wine bar and try to pull some smooth talking city boys......or go beg on myspace I'm sure £2 from each of your 'friends' will cover the bill.
