Western Union has been around for over 100 years. I don't think they will steal your credit card information.

Once you send it there may be a way to cancel the transaction as long as the other party has not already picked up the money you sent them. If you sent money via Western Union to a company, eg, make a payment on line, the companies that accept Western Union have an instant credit set up with WU so no, you won't get that one back.

Additional note: I just went to the Western Union Website and here's what it says about refunds: (I also noted you can even wire money into an inmates prison account. Who'd have thunk. . . .)

REFUNDS.

REFUNDS OF PRINCIPAL AMOUNT and cancellation of the money transfer will be made upon written request of the Sender if payment to the Receiver has not yet been made at the time the request is processed by Western Union. REFUNDS OF TRANSFER FEES will be made upon written request of the Sender if the money transfer is not available to the Receiver within the time specified by Western Union for the selected service, subject to the hours of operation that the Service is offered at the Agent location selected by the Receiver for payment and other special conditions. Refunds will be made within 45 days of receipt of a valid written request from the Sender.

Once you send your money, it is gone! Yes, it is safe. If sending money online, you do need to register an account with them. If doing so in person with a Western Union agent, I don't think so.

Be warned, Western Union is often the preferred method that scamsters will have you send money. If anyone you don't personally know is asking you to send money via Western Union, there's a good chance it's to a crook. Especially if it's a refund for a money order or cashiers check (usually fake) or to claim some sort of lottery or prize.
