I am threw party, have sent formal invitations and only a handful people actually rsvp'd....the others didn't rsvp but some of them still showed up and some did not. Don't you think that is rude towards your host or am I being just a little too old-fashioned?

I think they are just noncommittal. If something else comes up they may choose to go to that event instead so they don't commit to an RSVP.
It's rude, but people look at an invitation as an 'option' for the night, not something to plan in advance. Not too many things you can get people to make advanced plans for. They prefer weighing the options at the last moment. Of course this is very inconvenient for the hostess, but I don't think people really care anymore. They only worry about THEIR inconvenience.

Don't you wish you could add to the invitation that if they do not RSVP, accommodations for them will not be factored in?

That is rude and I think the reason people do that is because either they can't read, there lazy, or they think that the host wouldn't care. Next time make it clear on the bottom of the invitation no rsvp no go and if they show up don't be afraid to tell them no.

If the invitations specifically said to RSVP, then hopefully everyone would do so. Some people honestly might not know what it means anymore, so maybe a polite version of "If you're coming, call first" would work better.

You are not old-fashioned - those people were rude. I wouldn't invite them anymore!

Too lazy, I think, or maybe unwilling to commit. No, you are not old fashioned, just courteous.
